Shore Family Eyecare: A Caring Family Practice

Our practice in Manasquan has been developed to provide a unique and highly specific type of expert eye care to the community. Some featured services we offer are Low Vision and Vision Rehabilitation Services, Pediatric Examinations, and Vision Therapy. Shore Family Eyecare now offers MaxiVision Eye Vitamins.

Our optometrists, Drs. Maria and Harvey Richman, Dr. Bryan Ross, and Dr. Kathleen Kinzley are happy to fulfill all of your eye care needs. Comprehensive eye exams are available through the office six days per week. Our family optometric eye doctors have taken a progressive approach to healthcare by integrating electronic health records and electronic medicine prescribing in their practice.

What is the examination like to determine if someone has dry eyes?

A large part of the examination is finding out what the patient is experiencing and determining the type of dry eye causing the symptoms. We examine the surface of the eye under a microscope to look at the quantity and the quality of the tear film. Additionally, we examine the eyelids and the glands inside the eyelids to insure they are healthy.

What are the typical treatments for dry eyes?

There are a wide range of treatments ranging from over the counter products to specialty laser procedures. Many times using artificial tears and vitamin supplements can help boost the tear film. There are prescription eye drops that can aid in tear production as well as laser procedures for patients with more advanced dry eye.

Are there any recommendations to help people avoid dry eye?

Of course – stay hydrated and making sure you consume enough water each day. Additionally, take breaks from your computer and smart phone. I recommend the 20/20/20 Rule – take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away and blink your eyes. Finally, wearing sunglasses is critical to protecting the surface of the eye and the eyelids from UV exposure.

The New Jersey Diabetic Eye Health Alliance (NJDEHA) is a program designed to target known public health concerns surrounding the care of diabetics. It specifically addresses the optometric evaluation of the diabetic patient and disease management issues such as timeliness, accessibility of care, professional communication, quality management, delivery system cost efficiencies and clinical outcomes. This program and its participating health care professionals will devote serious and sustained effort to deliver comprehensive and expedient diabetic eye care and share the results of the assessment with all involved in the care of the patient.
